Griezmann Makes the Difference as San Diego FC Falls to Orlando City

ORLANDO, FL — First meeting. New territory. One moment was all it took.

San Diego FC made its first-ever trip to Orlando on September 5, stepping onto the pitch at Inter&Co Stadium for a matchup with Orlando City SC and one of Major League Soccer’s newest global stars: Antoine Griezmann.

For San Diego, it was another opportunity to test themselves on the road against Eastern Conference opposition.

For Griezmann, it was another opportunity to remind MLS exactly who he is.

The Frenchman delivered.

One first-half finish proved to be the difference as Orlando City handed San Diego FC a 1–0 defeat in the first meeting between the two clubs.

Griezmann Strikes

The opening stages saw both sides searching for control, but in the 28th minute, Orlando found its breakthrough.

Daryl Dike helped start the move before Justin Ellis slipped the ball into the middle of the box. Waiting there was Griezmann.

One touch to settle.

One right-footed finish into the corner.

1–0 Orlando.

It was the kind of sequence Griezmann has made a career out of finishing — finding space, staying composed and making the defense pay when the opportunity arrives.

More importantly for Orlando, the goal continued an impressive run of form for its new No. 7.

Griezmann entered the night already heating up and walked away with his fourth goal across three matches, continuing to make an immediate impact since arriving in Major League Soccer.

San Diego Pushes Back

San Diego wasn't going away quietly.

SDFC came out looking for a response in the second half, applying more pressure and trying to find openings in an Orlando defense protecting a one-goal advantage.

Anders Dreyer and San Diego's attack continued looking for the breakthrough while changes from the bench brought fresh legs into the match.

But Orlando refused to crack.

Goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau and the Lions' back line held San Diego scoreless, with SDFC finishing the night with seven shots and two on target.

On the opposite end, CJ dos Santos helped keep San Diego within striking distance, recording three saves and giving his side a chance to steal something from the match until the final whistle.

The equalizer never came.

A Tough Night in Florida

The loss snapped San Diego's two-match MLS winning streak and marked only the third time SDFC had been held scoreless in league play this season.

Still, the match remained within reach from beginning to end.

There was no blowout. No runaway performance.

Just one opening.

And Griezmann took it.

That was the difference.

Orlando City SC 1. San Diego FC 0.

For San Diego, it was a frustrating night on the road and another lesson in how small the margins can become at this level.

For Orlando, it was three points.

For Griezmann, it was another goal — and another reminder that one of Europe's most recognizable stars is beginning to make his mark in MLS.

First Meeting in the Books

San Diego FC and Orlando City had never shared the field before Saturday night.

Now they have.

The first chapter belongs to Orlando.

But for San Diego, the season moves forward, with another new stadium, another new opponent and another experience added to a young club still building its story in Major League Soccer.

First meeting. One goal. Three points decided by one moment.
