San Diego Wave FC made the second half count Friday night, taking down the Kansas City Current 2–0 at Snapdragon Stadium. An own goal opened the door, Kennedy Wesley delivered the late finish, and Sandra Paños kept Kansas City off the scoreboard as San Diego collected another three points in its push for playoff home-field advantage.

The final score made it look comfortable. Getting there took some work.

Kansas City tested San Diego early, forcing Paños into action while the Wave searched for their own rhythm. The hosts found opportunities through Trinity Byars, Melanie Barcenas and Gia Corley, but neither team could break through before halftime.

That changed five minutes after the restart.

Mimi Van Zanten helped keep an attack alive on the right, and Kimmi Ascanio moved the ball to Barcenas. Her delivery toward the back post went in off Kansas City defender Laney Rouse, giving San Diego a 1–0 lead in the 50th minute. It was the kind of dangerous ball that forces a defender to make a decision—and this one went the Wave’s way.

Kansas City still had time to respond, but San Diego protected its advantage. Paños finished with four saves, giving the Wave the clean sheet they needed while the attack worked toward a second goal.

Wesley supplied it in the first minute of stoppage time, scoring off an assist from Kenza Dali to put the result away. After a scoreless opening half, San Diego had its two-goal cushion and all three points secured.

For the 10,761 in attendance, the night ended with a home win built on timely defending and two decisive second-half moments. San Diego improved to 14–8–3 with 45 points, adding another result to its postseason push.
