From LaLiga to MLS: Lewandowski and Griezmann Renew Their Rivalry in Orlando
ORLANDO, FL — Different league. Different clubs. Different continent.
Same familiar faces.
Major League Soccer got a taste of European football royalty as Orlando City SC welcomed the Chicago Fire to Inter&Co Stadium, putting two of the league’s biggest summer arrivals on the same field: Antoine Griezmann and Robert Lewandowski.
Not long ago, Griezmann was wearing the red and white of Atlético Madrid while Lewandowski was leading the line for FC Barcelona. This time, the longtime LaLiga rivals found themselves thousands of miles away from Spain, wearing the colors of Orlando and Chicago and adding another chapter to their careers in MLS.
A European Rivalry Lands in MLS
The matchup already carried plenty of weight before kickoff.
Lewandowski arrived in Chicago over the summer after closing out his decorated run with Barcelona, while Griezmann made his move to Orlando after another chapter with Atlético Madrid.
Their arrival represented exactly where MLS continues to head: world-class names aren't simply arriving for a farewell tour — they're being dropped directly into meaningful matches.
On Wednesday night, the spotlight belonged to both of them.
Chicago wasted almost no time making its presence felt. Puso Dithejane struck in just the fourth minute, putting the Fire ahead 1–0 and immediately forcing Orlando to chase the game.
Then Florida weather decided it wanted some attention, too.
Severe conditions brought the match to a lengthy halt just before halftime, creating an unusual pause in what had already been a high-profile night in Orlando.
When play finally resumed, so did Orlando's fight.
Griezmann Creates. Lewandowski Finishes.
In the 52nd minute, Griezmann delivered.
The French star whipped an in-swinging corner into the box, where David Brekalo attacked it and headed home the equalizer.
1–1.
Griezmann had officially put his fingerprints on the matchup.
But Lewandowski wasn't finished.
In the 68th minute, the Polish striker drove into Orlando's penalty area and drew a foul, giving Chicago an opportunity from the spot.
There wasn't much mystery about who was taking it.
Lewandowski stepped forward and buried the penalty into the bottom corner, putting Chicago back ahead 2–1.
Vintage Lewandowski.
Orlando continued pushing for another equalizer, with Griezmann getting an opportunity of his own late in the match, but Chicago held on.

Orlando City SC 1. Chicago Fire 2.
Old Rivals, New Colors
The scoreboard belonged to Chicago, but the bigger picture stretched beyond three points.
Seeing Lewandowski and Griezmann standing across from one another in an MLS match felt like a snapshot of just how much the league continues to evolve.
These are players who have competed on some of football's biggest stages. Champions League nights. World Cups. LaLiga battles. Packed European stadiums.
Now they're bringing those résumés — and those rivalries — to MLS.
Griezmann walked away with an assist.
Lewandowski walked away with the game-winning goal.
And for one night in Orlando, a rivalry built across European football found a new home in America.
Different clubs. Different continent. Same stars.
