The rivalry made the trip. The goals didn’t.
Club América and Cruz Azul brought the Clásico Joven to Snapdragon Stadium on Thursday night, finishing in a 0–0 draw in an international friendly. Neither side found the breakthrough, leaving the latest meeting between the Mexico City rivals without a winner.
Their previous matchup had delivered seven goals and a 4–3 Cruz Azul victory in Liga MX. San Diego got a much tighter contest, with both clubs using the international break to give players minutes ahead of the remaining Apertura schedule.
For América, one of the notable storylines was Luis Ángel Malagón’s return in goal. The match also gave both coaching staffs an opportunity to evaluate different combinations, with changes throughout the night gradually reshaping the contest.
América pushed for a winner in the second half and produced a late opportunity through Alejandro Cárdenas. After receiving a through ball from Carlos Álvarez, Cárdenas got a shot away inside the penalty area, but Cruz Azul goalkeeper Andrés Gudiño handled the attempt to keep the match level.
As more substitutions arrived, the closing minutes gave younger players a chance to take part in the rivalry. Neither team could turn those final opportunities into a deciding moment, and the whistle ended the match with the scoreboard untouched.
For San Diego, the fixture brought two of Mexican soccer’s biggest clubs to a local stage. For América and Cruz Azul, it provided another meeting with a familiar opponent and valuable playing time during the league pause.
The next chapter of the Clásico Joven will have to settle the bragging rights. At Snapdragon, neither side could land the finishing blow.
